The first date game that skips "so, what do you do?"

Asking for… is a question game for dates. You both write the questions you'd never say out loud, we can mix in some of ours so neither of you knows who asked the bold one, and you take turns answering. It turns a first date from an interview into a conversation. It runs in your browser, so there's nothing to download (or explain).

Things you want to ask but can't quite

  • Their worst date ever. You want to hear theirs. You don't want to go first.
  • How do you ask about exes without it becoming A Whole Thing?
  • Did you know people who ask more follow-up questions on dates get more second dates? Science says curiosity is attractive.
  • Kids, a dog, a boat? You can't ask on date one. Unless the game asks.
  • Their most controversial food opinion. Better to find out now.

Why a game beats an interview

First dates have a habit of turning into job interviews: where are you from, what do you do, any siblings? A Harvard study of speed dating found that people who asked more follow-up questions were liked more, and got more second dates. The catch is that coming up with good questions is hard when you're nervous. The game does the asking, and you get to be curious.

Mix in some of our questions, and the bold one might not be yours. Plausible deniability is very romantic.

When to bring it out

When the conversation stalls. Pulling out your phone isn't a red flag if you're both playing.

Date two or three. You've done the basics. Now it gets interesting.

A night in. Cheaper than dinner, and more revealing.

How it works

  1. Ask the bold one. Write the questions you'd never say out loud on a first date.

  2. We can add questions too, so they'll never know which one was yours. You decide how many.

  3. No download. Share a code and you're both playing in seconds.

FAQ

What should you talk about on a first date?

Things the other person is excited about, stories rather than facts, and follow-up questions on whatever they bring up. The goal is a conversation, not an interview.

Isn't it weird to play a game on a first date?

Less weird than a ten-minute silence. Suggest it as a joke and see how they react. Their answer tells you something too.

Can just two people play?

Yes. Dating mode is built for two.

Do we need to download an app?

No. You both join from your phone's browser with a six-character code.
